"We are being attacked by tanks from both sides from a distance of 400 meters and by the artillery. There is no support from our artillery. The militants gave us time to leave the new terminal by 5:00 p.m. If we do not, the terrorists will simply destroy us here. The terminal is fully swept. But we will not go anywhere. We're not going to back down. For three days they have been shelling us with heavy guns. There is nothing left here. We are waiting for support," one of the men said.
Acting spokesperson of the General Staff Vladyslav Selezniov told Ukrainska Pravda that the soldiers are being provided with artillery support.
"We got in touch with the commander. The situation there is very complicated, but our guys are holding the line, the artillery assists our soldiers, so there is no hysterical sentiment out there," Selezniov said.
"The amount of effort, means, and communication between the defenders of the Donetsk airport and fire support units allows us to do this," he added.
The sources of Ukrainska Pravda also report intense shelling of the 'gates to the Donetsk airport' - village Pisky - by the militants.
Previously, the "cyborgs" frequently received ultimatums and threats from the militants.
Soldier of the 95th Brigade, call sign Askold notes that the Ukrainian fighters managed to extend control over the territory of the airport before the New Year.
"The whole area between the weather stations and Spartak is neutral; the enemy will not be able to drive heavy equipment up on it, it has no opportunity to sweep the runway to the previous extent," he said.
"We have the technical ability now not to go from the northern part of the airport and not along the runway," he added.
Earlier this year, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksandr Turchynov stated that in the case of threat to the lives of our troops, return fire will be opened against the militants.
