The situation in the conflict zone in the Donbas is deteriorating, especially around Donetsk airport, Pisky village and Horlivka town.

Censor.Net cites the latest report of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) to Ukraine based on information received as of 6 p.m. (Kyiv time), 2 January 2015.

"The SMM received reports about a deterioration of the relative calm since 9 December 2014, with an increase in ceasefire violations and casualties reported by the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination in the Donetsk region," the mission reports.

According to the SMM, 38 incidents caused by small arms and light weapons fire, artillery and multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS) shelling were registered around Donetsk airport, government-controlled Pisky village and DPR-controlled Horlivka town.

According to the report of the participants from Ukrainian and Russian armed forces and members of the so-called DPR and the LPR, three civilians were killed in Horlivka and three injured; one military personnel from the Ukrainian army was also killed and seven Ukranian troops injured in Donetsk airport.

The SMM could not independently verify the information.

It is also reported that a Russian army officer claimed that the security situation was deteriorating, particularly at Donetsk airport, Pisky and Horlivka.

"The RF officer reported an increase in ceasefire violations, including a rise in the use of heavy artillery," the mission states.

The SMM also mentions the shelling of Hirske village in the Luhansk region with Grad multiple-launch rocket systems on Jan. 1

However, due to the possible presence of UXO in the area of the shelled checkpoint, the SMM could not confirm the impacts of shelling or rumours about casualties.
