"Our allies are democratic countries. And yet no one has cancelled the NATO member countries' decision, which was adopted in 2008, that Ukraine may become a member of the Alliance. Therefore, they gladly told us that since we have changed our concept, they accept it and want the Ukrainians to decide for themselves whether they want to join NATO or not. If the answer is yes, then let's cooperate," Ohryzko said. "So, in my opinion, it is the people who should make the decision about Ukraine's accession NATO membership. We need to prepare for a national referendum on that issue. I think it could be held as early as the next year. The sooner it takes place, the better it will be for us, because both the West and the Ukrainian government will understand that this is the people's will, which should be executed," the diplomat concluded.
