The EU sanctions against Russia would be canceled only after the elimination of reasons for their introduction, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said after the EU summit in Brussels, Censor.NET reports citing Deutsche Welle.
According to Angela Merkel, the EU is ready for further negotiations with Russia on de-escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. She also pointed to the fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin has promised to preserve the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but the conclusions will be drawn by his actions.
The Chancellor did not rule out economic cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union in the long term. Angela Merkel stressed that it is possible in the case of "steady progress in the performance of the Minsk agreements" on settlement of the crisis in the Donbas. She added that the EU has nothing against efforts of seeking more common economic space together with Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan."
