 UEFA Bans Crimean Football Clubs From Participating in Russian Championship

The UEFA Executive Committee has ruled on the participation of the Crimean clubs in the Russian Championship.

Starting Jan. 1, 2015 the Crimean football clubs are not eligible to participate in any competitions held under the auspices of the Russian Football Union (RFU), Censor.NET reports citing the UEFA website.

The RFU will also not be able to organize any football competitions in Crimea without the consent of the Football Federation of Ukraine.

In addition, Crimea is now to be regarded as a "special zone" for football purposes until further notice of UEFA, which will help fund the football and infrastructure of the peninsula.

Executive Committee member František Laurinets has been appointed inspector and head of this UEFA initiative.

UEFA is planning an official visit to Crimea soon.

Earlier, Russia stated that the final decision on the Crimean clubs will rest with FIFA.
