Checkpoints Fortified in Sumy, Regional Center in the North of Ukraine

Main checkpoints at motorway entrances to the city of Sumy, the regional center in the northern part of Ukraine 50 km from the Russian border, are being fortified.

This was ordered Tuesday by the city mayor Oleksandr Lysenko, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"These should not be just small stands or restriction and inspection for transport. These should be fortified checkpoints. We start to construct them, you know the situation," the mayor said.

The location for each checkpoint has been agreed. The construction will begin on two directions from which transport from Russia enters the city.

As reported earlier, five checkpoints appeared near Sumy in August. They were constructed from empty street kiosks that turned out not to belong to anybody.

Traffic police and police officers of the city are on duty 24/7 on the checkpoints. They check all the transport entering and leaving the city in search for criminals, weapons, and explosives.
