 Ukraine Declared Refusal of Non-Aligned Status. It May Become NATO Member - NATO Secretary General

The Ukrainian government has notified the representatives of the Alliance during the NATO-Ukraine meeting that Kyiv denies non-alignment policy.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced at the press conference after the NATO-Ukraine meeting, Censor.NET reports citing Europeiska Pravda.

"Earlier, Ukraine has been formally adhering to the non-alignment position. Now, the government announces that Ukraine forfeits that status, and we also respect this decision. And if Ukraine will apply for NATO membership, this application will be examined," Stoltenberg said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine confirmed the fact that Kyiv has voiced such a decision to the Alliance during the Ukraine - NATO meeting.

NATO Secretary General separately stressed in this regard that the alliance believes the Bucharest NATO Summit 2008 decision on the Euro-Atlantic prospects of Ukraine to be valid.

"We still uphold the view that Ukraine will become NATO member," he said.
