"This is a clear objective and, if there is unity of all government authorities we can come closer to this goal by 2020. This refers not only to the EU membership, but also membership in NATO," Lubkivskyi said.
According to him, the main advantage of NATO is that in all the history of the Alliance there have not been a single attack against it.
"We cannot afford to go into a shell with our internal problems ideologically, and we cannot afford to be a neutral country. Ukraine withdrew to itself and let Russia get ahead. Ukraine has chosen the non-aligned path and lost Crimea. These are the consequences," Lubkivskyi said, according to UNIAN.
However, he noted that it is unacceptable for Ukraine in terms of outlook, and from the point of view of international experience and practices.
Speaking of Russia, he said that Ukraine needs to change its way of thinking. "What kind of Russia do we need? That's the question that should be at the heart of our thinking," the diplomat added.
According to him, there should be a reactive approach to how Ukraine treats the Russian formula of the so-called "legitimate interests", which are the basis of President Putin's doctrine. "(When) there are some fictitious, imaginary, so-called "legitimate interests" of Russia - "take these interests into account and we will stop the aggression", it is open "blackmailing," the Deputy Foreign Minister said.
According to him, Ukraine needs Russia as a democratic, free and predictable state, which is able to adequately deal with its massive, enormous social and economic problems.
"Thus, we must understand that Russia will inevitably be forced to return to civilized relations with Ukraine and the world. There is no alternative, but all scenarios must be considered. The story with Crimea, the story with the East taught us the most important - we should not be afraid to foresee the worst, we need to prepare for the worst, in fact, we need to be mobilized," Lubkivskyi said.
He added that Ukraine, despite everything, should defend the approach of peaceful resolution of the situation.
