Russia sent retired GRU officer Sergei Astashov from Novosibirsk region to fight in Donbas. PHOTOS

Most of Russian alleged «volunteers" who fight against Ukraine in Donbas served as professional military in the past.

Investigative blogger Iraklii Komakhidze writes for InformNapalm, Censor.NET reports.

"Some of the fighters follow 'the call of the heart' (ideological fools), but the majority of them come by the so-called "Komsomol permit", which simply means deployment order from above. Here is a shining example of a redeployed soldier: Sergey Astashov, 44, resident of Berdsk, the Novosibirsk region, Russian Federation.

Since October 2014, the fighter has served in one of intelligence units of 'LPR'/'DPR' illegal armed groups. These groups are partly staffed with freelance instructors, the so-called "active reserve" of the GRU Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation," the blogger wrote.

"By scrolling the Russian terrorist's social network profile, one can assume that he emerged in Donbas not because of his ideological beliefs. According to Astashov's personal file, he served in maritime border troops and later in the GRU Special Forces (a special forces unit has been stationed in Berdsk, the Novosibirsk region until recently). After retirement from his service, Astashov got a nice cushy job in the Ministry of Emergency Situations. But then the Homeland called him back on duty.

Apparently, Astashov must have lost his skills of being discreet while at work, which are imparted at the GRU service. Perhaps he missed his kids, Ksusha and Nikita, and to stay in touch with them or simply just for showing off, Astashov opened a "VKontakte" account where he posts "travel" photos from Donbas," Komakhidze wrote.

The blogger also reminded that earlier he introduced another retired GRU "volunteer" from Vladivostok, a 44-year-old Yuri Butyatov, who along with other terrorists was trained together with the Russian military.
