Probe into Handziuk’s murder not classified, it’s about investigation confidentiality, - SBU

The pretrial investigation of the murder of activist and Kherson mayor's aide Kateryna Handziuk is not classified. The investigator decides whether it is necessary or not to release certain details of the probe.

As reported by Censor.NET, this was said by Head of the Secretariat of Ukraine’s SBU Security Service, Ihor Huskov on air of Hromadske TV channel.

"A public figure made an unfortunate statement in which he used the term 'classified'. There is no secrecy in this case. The Criminal Procedure Code, first of all its Article 222, defines the order, scope and way to disclose details of a pre-trial investigation. The officer conducting a pre-trial investigation decides whether there is a need to disclose certain information on the progress of the probe and determines the extent of disclosure. Therefore, it’s about confidentiality of investigation and not classifying it," he explained.

However, Huskov declined to answer the question as to whether the SBU suspects someone of ordering the attack.

He also voiced no theories in the Handziuk murder case but promised to immediately inform the public on the investigation findings as soon as there is such an opportunity.

"We are going to inform the public about the pace of the probe if this would not interfere with the investigation," the law enforcer said.

As reported, Kherson City Council executive officer, Kateryna Handziuk, who tried to deal with local separatists and harshly criticized the authorities, namely the law enforcement officials, was doused with acid in Kherson early on July 31.

On Aug. 2, she was urgently taken from Kherson to Kyiv by an air ambulance.

On Aug. 3, the law enforcers detained the person suspected of perpetrating attack on the activist.

She reportedly died of a blood clot in a Kyiv-based hospital on Nov. 4 after long treatment.
