This was stated by NSDC Secretary, Oleksandr Turchynov during live-firing exercise at Yahorlyk proving ground of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Censor.NET reports citing the NSDC press service.
The units of the Air Defense Forces of the Ground Forces and the Anti-aircraft missile troops of the Ukrainian Air Force participated in the special combat firing exercises of different anti-aircraft missile systems (various versions of C-300, Buk, Kub, Tor and other systems). The pilot-testing exercise of anti-aircraft missile systems, which had been thoroughly upgraded by domestic defense companies, were also conducted.
According to the NSDC secretary, these comprehensive measures were undertaken to perfect a system of multilayer air defense of the country and "identify ways of modernizing the anti-aircraft missile systems in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine as well as develop new air defense capabilities."
"The restoration of the air defense system is one of the most pressing issues of our country's security and defense sector and one of the top priorities set out by the NSDC of Ukraine," he said adding that the Ukrainian air defense had incurred the greatest losses and deliberate continuous destruction till 2014.
Turchynov noted that Ukrainian military demonstrated considerable skill and proficiency at the exercise by effectively destroying air targets at different range. "The performance of the upgraded anti-aircraft missile systems proved to be compliant with the declared one," he said.
Upon completion of the tests, the NSDC secretary held a meeting with the military leadership and designers of the defense enterprises to determine the priority tasks for strengthening the country's air defense capability.
