During the anti-sabotage drills held last August, the Ukrainian Army's special operation forces were tasked with penetrating the country's major ammunition depots and carry out conditional subversive acts.

In the course of the exercise, spec-op troops managed to gain unhindered access to all sites on their task list. That is, in the event of an actual subversive act, the sites would have been destroyed by similar enemy teams, Censor.NET Chief Editor Yurii Butusov wrote in an article for ZN.UA, according to UNIAN.

The journalist says the efforts to enhance security measures at ammo storage sites remain insufficient. Today, there is a sabotage threat to the three remaining strategic arsenals: the 47th Arsenal of the Ground Forces Command, (the Khmelnytskyi region), the 222nd Central Artillery Ammunition Base (the Cherkasy region), and the 1322nd Artillery Ammunition Base, the expert notes.

One of the groups participating in the exercises secured unhindered access to one of the ammunition storage facilities in central Ukraine in broad daylight, being unnoticed by security, Butusov wrote and attached a picture the commandoes took at the arms depot to prove that their conditional subversive attack was successfull.

"There is no doubt that on the eve of the presidential and parliamentary elections, the enemy will seek to carry out sabotage in other depots as well," Butusov warns, urging the authorities responsible to boost protection at ammunition storage sites.

As reported, an explosion rocked the support area of the 6th arms depot near the town of Ichnia, the Chernihiv region, around 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 9 setting it on fire. The corresponding security measures were introduced all across the Chernihiv region.

The State Emergency Service reported at least 10,000 locals being evacuated from the danger zone.

The prosecutor's office opened criminal proceedings over negligence. The pre-trial investigation was entrusted to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) directorate in the Chernihiv region.

According to the SBU, there are three theories behind the causes of the accident, with the major one being an act of sabotage committed by a subversive group. Two others are the violation of the rules for fire safety or storage of ammunition, and deliberate arson or detonation in order to conceal the lack of ammunition.
