FM Szijjarto to Ukraine's top diplomat: Hungary to continue blocking NATO-Ukraine Commission

Hungary is going to continue blocking the NATO-Ukraine Commission at the ministerial level.

As reported by Censor.NET citing Deutsche Welle via UNIAN, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told his Ukrainian counterpart Pavlo Klimkin during their talks on the sidelines of the EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg.

Szijjarto said that Ukraine had failed to make any progress on the law on education and to implement the recommendations of the Venice Commission. The Hungarian Foreign Minister also expressed discontent over the recent petition to regulate the status of Ukrainian citizens with dual EU citizenship, as well as including a number of Hungarian citizens, including Szijjarto himself, in the Myrotvorets database of individuals threatening Ukraine's national security.

Both officials noted that while the conflict between the two countries has not been resolved, some significant progress is seen. "We need to find a path of how we could find a common language with Hungary. This is a difficult path," Pavlo Klimkin said.

According to Szijjarto, he would also like to "strengthen and improve relations." During the meeting of Hungarian and Ukrainian foreign ministers, the two top diplomats decided to hold consular consultations on the issue of Hungarian passports issued to Ukrainian nationals in Zakarpattia and finally agreed to have the name of the office of an envoy for the development of the Transcarpathian region changed.

Ukrainian media earlier reported about the issuance of Hungarian passports to Ukrainian citizens at the Hungarian consulate in the town of Berehove in Ukraine's Zakarpattia region. A video was posted showing Ukrainians getting Hungarian passports and taking an oath calling Hungary their homeland.

Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said that the Hungarian Consul, who handed over Hungarian passports to Ukrainians, will not stay in Ukraine. In response, Budapest threatened to take further steps to slow down Ukraine's integration into the EU.
