EU Will Not Survive Without Russian Gas, Putin Says

Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that the European Union cannot refuse energy supplies from Russia, as such a move would kill its competitive ability.

He stated this during a dialogue with the participants of the discussion club "Valdai", Censor.NET reports citing RIA Novosti.

"Could you imagine that this would happen by the will of our partners in Europe? I can hardly imagine it," Putin said.

According to him, the alternative sources of energy supplies to the EU can only be the unstable Middle East and the United States. Shale oil and gas can be delivered from America to Europe.

"But how much will it cost? If the Europeans will go for it, it will be a direct path to reduce their competitive ability, because it will be more expensive than exports through our pipelines. This is just killing your own competitiveness. I do not even know what kind of a colony Europe needs to be to go for it, and I think that common sense will prevail and this will not happen," Putin said.
