Naftohaz to Pay Gazprom $1.45 Billion Gas Debt Until the End of October - Oettinger

EU, Russia, and Ukraine during the negotiations in Brussels on Oct. 21 agreed that Naftohaz of Ukraine will pay off 1.45 billion dollars it owes to Gazprom until the end of October, as well as 1.65 billion dollars of prepayment by the end of this year.

European Commissioner for Energy Gunther Oettinger announced this at the briefing on Tuesday, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainska Pravda.

"Before the start of gas supply, Naftohaz agrees, despite the ongoing trial in the Stockholm arbitration, to pay 1.45 billion dollars to the end of October in settlement of the debt to Gazprom for the gas consumed in November and December 2013 and the following months of this year," he said.

Thus, Naftohaz debt will be reduced, Oettinger assured.

"Naftohaz has also expressed readiness to pay the second sum in the amount of $1.65 billion in full, which will total $ 3.1 billion. Thus it will cover a significant amount of the disputed (in the Stockholm arbitration) debt or completely cover this amount," the commissioner said.

At the same time, Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Yurii Prodan told the agency before talks in Brussels that the disputed amount of $3.1 billion includes 1.45 billion dollars of the debt for the year 2013, but another amount of 1.65 billion dollars is the charge for future gas supplies.
