 Police chief: Person who killed 10-year-old girl in yesterday’s hit-and-run in downtown Kyiv served with charge papers, placed in custody. VIDEO&PHOTOS

The driver of Hummer involved in a hit-and-run accident that claimed life of a 10-year-old girl was charged with committing an offense punishable by part 2 of article 283 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - violation of road traffic safety regulations.

As reported by Censor.NET, this was said by Kyiv police Chief Andrii Kryshchenko on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel.

"The driver, born in 1995, was apprehended. He has already been served with charge papers under part 2 of article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. … The motion to impose pre-trial restriction on him is being drafted. The investigation is underway. His biological materials necessary for alcohol and drug tests have been collected," Kyiv’s top policeman said.

Kryshchenko also confirmed that the suspect was trying to escape from the scene. He is now in custody facing 3 to 8 years in prison.

On July 24, Priamyi news outlet reported that a 10-year-old girl was hit by Hummer SUV on a pedestrian crossing at Lesi Ukrainky Avenue in downtown Kyiv. In the course of a pursuit, the police detained the SUV driver who tried to escape from the scene. The hit-and-run victim was taken by the ambulance. She reportedly succumbed to her injuries.
