As reported by Censor.NET, Commander of the Marine Corps of the Ukrainian Naval Forces, Major General Yurii Sodol said in an interview with Narodna Armia (People's Army) newspaper issued by Ukraine’s Defense Ministry.
"We gradually re-equip the Marine Corps units with advanced BTR-70DT armored personnel carriers. Two modern Kentavr fast assault crafts are being built for us as well. Moreover, Berdiansk-based marines battalion will receive upgraded IFVs," Sodol said.
He noted that marines already have new generation sniper rifles in service. Besides, the units are equipped with thermal imaging sights and upgraded small arms.
"By the end of this year, anti-tank missile systems will be shipped to the Marine Corps," he said.
"Naval infantry brigade’s tank battalion was completely rearmed with the T-80 BV main battle tanks in 2017. It is worth noting that the T-80BV tank is more maneuverable and faster compared to the T-64B tank. So their combat effectiveness is quite obvious," Sodol stressed.
The Marine Corps commander also elaborated on the naval artillery units and prospects for their development.
"The naval artillery carries out the whole range of fire tasks. Special attention is paid to the defense of the sea coast from the intrusion. For this purpose, we have various artillery systems at our disposal, both barrel and missile ones," the commander said.
