Yanukovych ex-body guard claims assassination attempt on runaway president was to be committed at Kharkiv summit

Ukraine’s runaway ex-President Viktor Yanukovych was going to visit Congress of lawmakers of all levels in Kharkiv on Feb. 22, 2014. However, the then president's security service decided to cancel Yanukovych’s visit to the Congress after they were allegedly warned of plans to assassinate him.

As reported by a correspondent for Censor.NET, Yanukovych’s ex-body guard Sergey Bernatsky told the Obolonskyi district court of Kyiv at today’s hearing of the case into the ex-president’s high treason.

"I later talked with Pavlenko (ex-chief of the president's security service - Ed.). He said that by the time he arrived at the Palace of Sports, there were already about 200 people in the hall who had not passed security control and obtained no clearance. He said that these group included individuals tasked to eliminate the president during the congress. A similar team, Pavlenko said, was waiting outside. That is, if the main team failed, the task should have been accomplished by the second - the reserve one. It should have been done with firearms, Molotov cocktails. The easiest way to get him (Yanukovych – Ed.) was while he was getting into his car," the witness claims.

On June 22, the Obolonskyi district court of Kyiv held 55th hearing on the merits of the case against ex-President Viktor Yanukovych indicted on charges of high treason and complicity in Russia’s waging of the war against Ukraine.
