Patriarch Filaret expects Kyiv-Pechersk, Pochaiv Lavras to be run by Ukrainian Church after it receives Tomos of Autocephaly

When Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate is granted Tomos of Autocephaly, the Kyiv-Pechersk and Pochaiv Lavras will no longer be run by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the Moscow Patriarchate.

Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kyiv Patriarchate, Filaret said in an interview with Ukrainska Pravda, Censor.NET reports.

"There are two Lavras: Kyiv-Pechersk and Pochaiv ones. Who are they going to belong to? To the Ukrainian church, because these are Ukrainian holy sites and they can not belong to the Russian church. If there is one Local Orthodox Church in Ukraine, and the other is Russian, it's not natural for the Ukrainian sacred place to be run by the Russian church. Unnatural and unlawful," Filaret stressed.

"Therefore, both the Kyiv-Pechersk and Pochaiv Lavras will in due time be transferred to the Ukrainian Church," the Patriarch added.

As reported, the local Ukrainian Orthodox Church may be granted the Tomos of Autocephaly as early as in July.

"There is every reason to believe that in the near future, I think it will be in July, we will get the Tomos and autocephaly," Filaret said on May 31.

On April 17, President Poroshenko said Ukraine was closer than ever before to creating an autocephalous united local church.

Pursuant to the instruction of Poroshenko, on April 20, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Rostyslav Pavlenko visited Istanbul and handed over to His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew the Appeal of the President of Ukraine on granting the Tomos of Autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

He also handed over the Verkhovna Rada’s resolution on the support for the President’s Appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew also received the appeals of the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox churches on granting the Tomos of Autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

The 1030th anniversary of the Christianization of Kyivan Rus-Ukraine will be marked on July 28, 2018.
