Poroshenko says filing memorandum to ICJ under lawsuit against Russian Federation on Russia Day is very symbolic

Memorandum submitted to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in Ukraine v. Russia case is a milestone in the process of proving that Russia will bear responsibility for all its unlawful actions.

"It is very symbolic that the UN International Court of Justice ruled to file a Memorandum in Ukraine v. Russia case on the violation of the International Convention on the Prohibition of the Financing of Terrorism and the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination on the Russia Day, June 12," President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko wrote on social media, Censor.NET reports.

According to the president, the document contains the amount of evidence so immense that has never been submitted to the ICJ before.

"This has been done so that no one ever doubts that Russia has committed unlawful actions and must bear responsibility for them. A lot of work is still to be done to prove the truth but the truth is on our side and therefore we will contend for truth with all appropriate means," the head of state added.

On Jan. 16, 2017, Ukraine filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice to hold Russian Federation accountable for acts of terrorism and ethnic discrimination in the course of its illegal aggression against Ukraine. The court also ordered Ukraine and Russia to fully implement the Minsk agreements.

The meeting of the delegations of the parties to the Ukraine v. Russia case chaired by ICJ President Ronnie Abraham was held On May 12, 2017. It was decided than that Ukraine must file the Memorandum containing all the evidence of the crimes committed by the Russian Federation since the beginning of its aggression against Ukraine by June 12, 2018 while the Russian Federation shall file its counter-memorandum by July 12, 2019.
