SBU provides protection for Babchenko, State Guard Administration chief says

Head of the Administration of State Guard of Ukraine Valerii Heletei says it is the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) that now guards Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko who was recently targeted by the Russian secret services.

"The SBU operatives do," Heletei said Friday responding to the question of a correspondent for Interfax-Ukraine on what agency is currently guarding Babchenko, Censor.NET reports.

He highly commended the special operation of the SBU to uncover and foil assassination attempt against the journalist and a terrorist attack. "It was a painstaking work which the SBU managed to accomplish in the first-rate fashion. They have documented all the key elements necessary to make this case solid in court. However, they would have to travel to Russia to catch the person who ordered the hit," the official said.

Russian writer and war correspondent Arkady Babchenko reportedly died of gunshot wounds to the back after he was attacked entering his apartment in Kyiv’s Dniprovskyi district on May 29.

On May 30, it turned out that Babchenko was alive and unharmed while the SBU conducted successful special operation to detain those who plotted attempt against him.

On May 31, the Shevchenkivskyi district court of Kyiv imposed a 60-day pretrial detention without bail option against Borys Herman suspected of masterminding assassination attempt against Babchenko.
