According to the ombudsman, the assailants were armed and fired shots during the attack. Seven adults and more than 30 children who were in the camp during the attack fled to the forest. It is so far unknown whether someone has received any injuries.
"Taking into account that this incident bears clear signs of descent-based discrimination and incitement against the Roma national minority, the Commissioner initiated proceedings into this attack," the statement reads.
The ombudsman also filed a request to the leadership of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Ternopil region to respond to the attack in accordance with the legal provisions.
Besides, the human rights commissioner expressed her concern about the trend towards more frequent incidents motivated by intolerance towards members of the Roma minority. The commissioner continues following the investigation into arson attack on the Kyiv-based Roma camp carried out by the hardliners earlier and a similar case that took place in Lviv.
Denisova believes such acts of xenophobia need special attention of the law enforcement agencies, namely a more thorough investigation and taking measures to prevent such cases in the future.
The ombudsman calls on the public to be more tolerant and avoid discrimination on any grounds including related with descent, political, religious and other views, language, gender, ethnic and social origin.
