Deadly car crash in Kharkiv: both Lexus and Volkswagen drivers violated traffic rules

Both drivers involved in the road traffic accident that claimed lives in Kharkiv in October 2017 violated traffic regulations: Olena Zaitseva ran a red light while Hennadii Dronov started moving when the light was on yellow.

This was said by prosecutor Ihor Omelchenko after the hearing, Censor.NET reports referring to Radio Svoboda.

"The CCTV footage that was examined by the court today proved that both suspects in the case violated traffic rules: the driver of Lexus - 20-year-old Olena Zaitseva - and driver of Volkswagen Touareg - 49-year-old Hennadii Dronov - both could see each other and avoid collision. The first video shows that before collision Zaitseva ran a red light while Dronov started moving when it was yellow," the prosecutor said.

The experts, however, failed to establish the speed of both cars before they collided.

Earlier, the prosecutor's office of the Kharkiv region approved the indictment to 20-year-old local Olena Zaitseva for violation of traffic rules that led to the death of five people (part 3 article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). On Nov. 6, the law enforcers also brought charges against the second participant of the road traffic accident, Volkswagen Touareg driver Hennadii Dronov.

Oct. 18, 2017, a Lexus crashed into a pedestrian crowd in Kharkiv, killing five on spot and wounding six people. The driver, a 20-year-old woman, was detained and arrested by the court for two months.
