"A patrol police unit was completing a report on a road accident involving Skoda Octavia and Lexus on Stryiska Str. in Lviv at 5:25 p.m. when the 42-year-old driver of Skoda, a resident of the Zakarpattia region, stabbed the policewoman while trying to flee the scene. Her colleague was compelled to use firearms against him," the National Police Communications Department said in a statement, Censor.NET reports.
After firing a warning shot, the policeman injured the attacker in the leg and detained him.
The wounded police officer and the assailant were taken to a hospital. The 28-year-old policewoman underwent surgery. The attacker’s injury is not thought to be life-threatening.
The law enforcers initiated criminal proceedings under part 1 of article 348 (infringement on life of a law enforcement officer) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine which is punishable by imprisonment for up to 15 years or life sentence.
