The president recalled that he had negotiated arms deliveries with U.S. President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and Defense Secretary James Mattis.
"The first batch of these arms should be delivered in a few weeks," Poroshenko said.
He refused to elaborate on the arms shipments arguing that the information was classified but said that supplies of counter sniper equipment should be expected soon.
"We are talking about a variety of equipment starting from counter sniper systems as it was the Russian snipers who killed a great number of Ukrainian soldiers in the east of our country," the president said. Poroshenko believes that such systems will help Ukraine to significantly reduce losses especially on the forefront.
"We are also talking about electronic warfare and air defense systems as well as many other types of weapons," he said.
On Dec. 25, 2017, ABC News reported quoting a source in the U.S. Department of State familiar with the matter as saying that President Donald Trump considered supplying Ukraine with 35 Javelin anti-tank missile systems and 210 missiles worth $47 million.
U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine Kurt Volker said Jan. 28 that the United States had started preparations for the transfer of the Javelin anti-tank missile systems to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
