Obama Discussed Situation in Ukraine with the EU Leaders

U.S. President Barack Obama discussed the next moves to overcome the Russian crisis with the leaders of four European countries

According to the White House, Obama had a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, Censor.NET reports citing Radio Liberty. The telephone conversation took place after the United States and the European Union tightened sanctions against Russia in response to the shooting Boeing-777 down by the Russian terrorists in the Donetsk region. West accuses separatists of the passenger aircraft shooting as well as Russia is accused of the militants support and weapons supply making it possible to shoot the plane down.

The EU announced that a list of 15 individuals and 18 entities in respect of which it has imposed sanctions because of the situation in Ukraine was adopted late on Friday. We are talking about the head of Russia's republic of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov, head of the Russian intelligence Mikhail Fradkov and the head of the Russian FSB Alexander Bortnikov. Tightening of the U.S. sanctions is expected next week. The European Union like the United States and some other countries has already introduced a number of sanctions in connection with the annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea by Russia and destabilization in Ukraine. The first stage sanctions of the EU were political, the second stage sanctions, which are being still expanded from time to time, are the sanctions against individuals and entities from Russia and Ukraine involved in the destabilization of Ukraine.

The EU, like the U.S., threatens to impose the third stage of such sanctions against the entire economic sectors of Russia if Moscow would not stop to destabilize Ukraine. But the EU has been altering the terms of the sanctions of this stage introduction from time to time constantly avoiding to impose them. The European Union mentioned the next Tuesday to be the deadline when the sanctions close to the third stage may be imposed.
