 Merkel assured Poroshenko that Ukraine Will Receive Support from the European Council

In a phone conversation with Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko discussed the issue of support of the international community regarding the settlement of the situation in the Donbas on the eve of the meeting of the European Council of July 16.

The President informed the Chancellor of Germany on further inflow of weapons and militants to the territory of eastern regions of Ukraine through the Ukrainian-Russian border, Censor.NET informs, citing the press service of the President.

Angela Merkel noted that Ukraine was currently one of top-priority issues for her. The Chancellor assured that the following day, Ukraine would receive "firm support" from the EU at the meeting of the European Council.

The parties discussed efforts necessary for the acceleration of the activity of the OSCE mission on the border aimed at the implementation of its efficient monitoring.

The President informed that within a day, there had been two attempts of holding the meeting of Trilateral contact group in the format of video conference. The parties also discussed the possibility of continuing negotiations in Norman format.

The President assured Angela Merkel that he stood for a peaceful settlement. He cited an example of Sloviansk where after the liberation of the city from terrorists, vital infrastructure had been restored within 24 hours and people had received an opportunity to return to normal life. Actions of the Ukrainian government in Luhansk and Donetsk will be the same.
