 Kidnapping of Savchenko Shows Apparent Connection between Russia and the Separatists - U.S. Department of State

According to the U.S. Department of State, the detention of Ukrainian female killer pilot Nadiya Savchenko in Russia as a testimony to the alleged connections between the separatists in Eastern Ukraine and the Russian authorities.

Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland stated this at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing to examine Russia and developments in Ukraine, Censor.NET reports, citing ITAR-TASS and Voice of America.

She said that the fact t hat Savchenko, a Ukrainian Army helicopter pilot, had been seized by the separatists about a month ago and now she turned up in a Russian jail is a testimony to the alleged connections between the separatists in Eastern Ukraine and the Russian authorities.

"It is a clear violation of international legal norms and human rights," Nuland stated.

As it was reported earlier, the Investigative Committee of Russian Federation said that the Ukrainian pilot, captured by Luhansk militants, came to Russia under the guise of a refugee.

Savchenko is suspected in participating in mortar attack that killed Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin, employees of VGTRK (All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company).

The Voronezh court left Ukrainian kidnapped pilot Nadia Savchenko in the city jail till the end of August.
