European Council may Impose New Sanctions Against Russia on July 16 - Foreign Office

The European Council may impose sanctions against Russia on July 16. Head of UK’s Foreign Office William Hague stated this to Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin during a telephone conversation.

This is reported by Censor.NET with reference to RBC-Ukraine.

"The UK stands shoulder to shoulder with our European partners in the efforts to achieve a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Ukraine, but the European Council made it clear that we are prepared to impose additional sanctions against Russia if they are unable to take the necessary measures for the cessation of hostilities. I urge the Russian Federation to use its influence on the illegal militant groups and stop the flow of weapons and militants into the eastern part of Ukraine. Russia should not wait for the decision of the European Council on July 16 that it is unable to protect its own borders," Hague said.

On 27 June the European Council adopted a decision whereby until June 30 it expects Russia to take a number of steps to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine. Otherwise, the European Council has threatened to implement additional sanctions against Russia.

A regular session of the European Council is scheduled for July 16.
