Russian Defense Ministry Says They will not Help Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu assured the lawmakers of the State Duma that Russia's armed forces do not intervene and will not intervene in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

This was announced on Thursday in Moscow by Russian State Duma deputy Viktor Vodolatskiy who attended yesterday's closed session of the State Duma where Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu spoke, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"There were questions, and the Minister (Shoygu) clearly said that the Russian Federation, the armed forces of the Russian Federation do not interfere and will not interfere in that conflict that is going on today in Ukraine," he said.

According to Vodolatskiy the question was phrased as: "Will the Defense Ministry provide assistance to the Donetsk and Luhansk republics?" to which Shoygu said "No". In addition, the Russian MP noted that the issue of sending Russian troops into the territory of Ukraine "to assist our compatriots" was not discussed in the Duma.

On Wednesday, June 18 Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu addressed the State Duma deputies within the "government hour" behind closed doors.
