 Poroshenko to Merkel: "We Need Help of the EU and US to Strengthen Control of the Border with Russia"

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko had a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday, during which they discussed implementation of the plan of peace initiatives, signing of the economic part of the Association Agreement with the EU, scheduled for June 27, and also touched on issues of the gas negotiation process.

As reported by Censor.NET citing the press service of the President, during the conversation, Poroshenko talked about the basic principles of implementing the plan to resolve the situation in eastern Ukraine. The President noted that in order to increase control over the state border of Ukraine it needs help of the EU and the U.S., while Ukraine will stick to its commitment.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed support for the steps to implement the peace plan of the President.

Among the principles of implementation of the peace plan, the Head of State noted a ten-kilometer buffer zone along the border and withdrawal of illegal armed groups, vacating all illegally occupied administrative buildings, restoration of local authorities and broadcast of central TV channels and radio stations.

The President also stressed on the need for the decentralization of power and early local and parliamentary elections. "This framework will form the logic of our further actions aimed at the implementation of the peace plan. Trilateral Liaison Group will develop the necessary phases and timetable for this," he said.

In the context of discussing relations with the EU, the President stated that Ukraine is ready to sign the economic part of the Association Agreement in Brussels on June 27. "We are preparing for effective and targeted consultations between the EU and Ukraine," he stressed.
