This was reported today by Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, Censor.NET reports citing the press service of the Ministry.
Today, around 3:00 p.m. an explosion and ignition of gas hub of the Urengoy-Uzhgorod Pomary pipeline occurred in Lokhvytsky district in the Poltava region. The height of the fire reached 100 m with the diameter of 200 - 300 m. Within five minutes, the Interior Ministry's task forces and a detachment of the State Service for Emergency Situations were immediately dispatched to the scene. There were no casualties among the population.
"At the moment, the gas pipeline on this branch is blocked, the danger of a larger catastrophe eliminated, and the fire was extinguished as of 4-15 p.m. The gas is being transited through a reserve branch in full. The Ministry of Interior task force is conducting investigations to determine the cause of the explosion. Several versions of the incident are being considered, including the key version - a terrorist act. According to local residents, just before the ignition, they heard two powerful pops which may indicate a deliberate explosion," Avakov said.
Currently, the Investigation Department opened criminal proceedings under Part 3, Article 292 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. If the key version confirmed, the case will be reclassified under the article of terrorism.
"I want to remind you that on the eve of the presidential elections we have prevented two attempts to commit terrorist acts at the Ukrainian gas transportation system in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. On June 3 Prime Minister Yatsenyuk said in his speech in Parliament that these subversions were aimed at discrediting the Ukrainian gas transportation system, interruption of gas transit to Europe and most importantly: the legitimization of the "South Stream" in the eyes of Europe," the Minister said.
Meanwhile, the press service of the Poltava region Ministry of Emergencies named the main cause of the explosion on a gas pipeline Urengoy-Uzhgorod-Pomary to be depressurization.
