Party of Regions Lacks Votes to Support the candidacy of Prime Minister Azarov

The Party of Regions does not have enough votes (226) to support the candidacy of former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov to renew his term at the post, writes Kommersant-Ukraine.

"The appointment of Mykola Azarov will continue the process of systemic reforms initiated by President Viktor Yanukovych and implemented by the Cabinet under the leadership of Mykola Azarov since 2010," said head of the Party of Regions faction Oleksandr Yefremov.

However, at this time the party does not have 226 votes to support his candidacy, but the politicians have assured that they are "working on this issue."

At the same time, the opposition is not going to take part in the election of members of the new Cabinet. "Udar party will not vote for reassignment of Azarov. This is a clear and unequivocal position. They had everything to carry out the necessary reforms in Ukraine and move our country, its economy, social policy towards European standards. They are losers, they cannot do anything. They think only of themselves. Mykola Azarov, stop torturing Ukraine" wrote opposition's Pavlo Rozenko on his social network page.

This view was supported by Batkivschyna, which says its politicians will definitely not support the candidacy of Azarov. It is noteworthy that the Communist Party, which had previously categorically stated that there will be no cooperation with the Party of Regions is now ready to change its mind.

"We'll see, because we gave not made the decision yet. We will analyze the situation and then make the final decision," said Petro Symonenko.

It should be noted that Arbuzov's candidacy for Prime Minister is not supported even by Regions representatives. "Even in the Party of Regions, not everyone is excited about the candidacy of Mr. Arbuzov. However, I do not rule out that the situation may develop this way: Serhii Arbuzov presentation will be made if the candidacy of Mykola Azarov fails," said the director of the Institute of Global Strategies Vadym Karasev .

Other experts believe that the Arbuzov belongs to the oligarchs which is an obvious minus compared to Azarov. "Mykola Azarov does not belong to any of the oligarch groups, and Serhii Arbuzov as a Prime Minister will be clearly a man of the Presidential family. This may set other oligarchs against Viktor Yanukovych which in turn can play against the President in the 2015 elections," assured the Director of the Democratic Initiatives Fund Iryna Bekeshkina.

In addition, the Regions project a change of around half of the Cabinet. "Around half of the Cabinet will change. There will be new people instead of those who got in the parliament. When the Prime Minister is elected then together they will determine who will go to the parliament and who will return to the government. This will be known at the end of the week," - said the representative of the ruling party Vladimir Rybak.

According to experts, the path of the new Cabinet must still change, but only slightly. "We need to repay debts, we have to do something about the exchange rates. Largely the government's course will be determined by the Committee on Economic Reforms, which has changed the economic course for 2013. Ukraine will try to revise the terms of its membership in the WTO. I do not rule out that there will be closer cooperation and more integration with the Customs Union," said Karasev.
