Legitimacy of Next Convocation of Verkhovna Rada Remains in Question, Says Opposition

Below is the text of a faction's statement provided by the press-service:

"Before perhaps the last session of the Verkhovna Rada of the 6th convocation, on behalf of the faction I would liked to announce that the legitimacy of the next convocation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is questionable.

The election was illegitimate starting from the illegal detention of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko and one of its leaders Yuriy Lutsenko.

Even while in prison, she showed courage and continues to fight for the rights of Ukrainian citizens to elect and be elected.

She went on hunger strike in protest against the systemic, massive fraud that led to the distortion of the citizens' voting.

She stopped it because the whole democratic world questioned the legitimacy and democracy of the Ukrainian elections.

Our faction thanks Yulia Volodymirivna for the courage and supports her decision to end the hunger strike.

After this step of Yulia Tymoshenko we believe it is necessary only increase the political pressure on the current regime led by Yanukovych.

We will do everything possible to ensure that forgers of the parliamentary elections are punished. To make sure that our comrades who have gained legitimate victories in single-seat constituencies took their place in parliament. We will fight with all constitutional means, both in Parliament and outside of it, to achieve the release of our leader Yulia Tymoshenko.

With regard to the election results announced by the Central Election Commission, they do not reflect the true choice of the citizens. The result which the CEC announced - is the result of systemic fraud, vote-buying, use of administrative resources, force interference by police and other authorities in the electoral process and complete dependency of the judiciary system that makes decisions solely in the interests of the regime and pro-government candidates.

The most vivid illustration of unprincipled direct election fraud was counting procedures in 94, 132, 194, 197 and 223 electoral districts where in order to drag the pro-government candidates into the parliament tens of thousands of votes were thrown away.

Mass violations in parliamentary elections are reflected in the evaluations of local and international observers. As a consequence, it has further worsened the reputation of our country in the world. International democratic community, in particular the observers from the OSCE and PACE had to admit: Ukraine has strayed off the path of democratic development and began movement in the opposite direction.

The responsibility for this lies with the current authorities led by President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych."
