"Who wants to do 5 years in prison for something you say, write or post on Facebook? I don't. I don't think anyone wants, too.
If there is even the slightest chance that you will get 2,3 or 5 years of prison for an article, investigation or a column the majority of journalists will not even come near it. It is hard to make anyone write something even now. And after the law is passed there will be nobody.
And it will happen even if the law is not used. And if somebody is tempted to use it then, considering the state of our courts the journalists will be gagged. Businessmen can do it through bribes and officials can do it by picking up the phone. And it is not going to be only journalists. The same regulations can be applied to commentators on Facebook. Russia already had cases when people were imprisoned for comments on social networks.
In other words the choice will be - go to prison or stay quiet.
And most importantly, the responsibility for journalists is tightened and there is not even a hint of tightening the punishment for selling electricity to the state at 5 times higher than market prices, buying oil derricks for state funds at the prices two times higher than their real ones, for building a palace the price of which is a hundred times more than owner's official income.
In other words, they don't want to just steal. They want to steal and gag anyone who talks about it.
That is why the law is scurvy and I think the Regions will cross a new line if they pass this law."
