Defamation Law Will Turn Ukraine into Isolated Third World Country, Says Yatsenyuk

Passing the Defamation Bill is nothing more than the Party of Regions' fear of free press.

Censor.NET reports that opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk at his press conference in Odessa said that the so-called Law on Defamation carries criminal punishment for "any information, first of all about the President or the government".

"This is the law that prohibits telling the truth and the criminal responsibility for the truth you will say on TV channels, your blogs, websites and newspapers," he told the journalists.

"It all fits into the overall concept of media control: switching off TVi, influence over journalists and media owners and now the last point - direct intimidation of journalists by criminal responsibility for truth about the current regime and the President," noted Yatsenyuk.

He stressed that adopting of the law testifies to the fact that Ukraine is turning into an isolated third world country.
