Shyrokov was one of the Donetsk airport defenders, served in Pisky and on the outskirts of Butivka mine. He was wounded twice, but got back into action each time he recovered. Andrii signed a contract and served in the 54th Mechanized Brigade. Shyrokov obtained his call sign "Simianyn" meaning the family man as he had five children including two of them adopted.
It took some time to confirm the death of the 46-year-old soldier as he was first considered captured by the militants. But the serviceman's body was found at the scene of the battle Dec. 22.
Hundreds of people came to the Church of the Mother of God in Yasne village in Synelnykove district of the Dnipropetrovsk region to pay final tribute to Andrii. The people took a knee as they were bidding last farewell to the soldier of the 54th Mechanized Brigade.
