Poroshenko offers Rada to introduce annulment of Ukrainian citizenship if dual nationality found

President Petro Poroshenko has proposed the Verkhovna Rada to consider voluntary acquisition of a foreign nationality by Ukrainians a sufficient reason for stripping them of Ukrainian citizenship.

Petro Poroshenko Bloc member and presidential envoy in the parliament Artur Herasymov told journalists, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainski Novyny.

"Today, March 13, the president introduced an urgent draft law to the parliament that addresses the problem of dual citizenship... The bill will clearly define that a person who voluntarily acquired the citizenship of another state will be viewed as falling under the termination of Ukrainian citizenship," he said.

According to him, the document specifies the grounds for the termination of Ukrainian citizenship, which include, among other, a failure to surrender (within a specified period) the passport of another state after acquiring the Ukrainian citizenship.

He stressed that these requirements relate only to persons who have acquired foreign citizenship voluntarily, and do not apply to residents of Russia-annexed Crimea, where the voluntary citizenship is out of question.

Earlier, leader of the Radical Party faction in the Verkhovna Rada Oleh Liashko and nine other lawmakers proposed the parliament to adopt a mechanism for the early termination of the powers of MPs if the facts of their foreign citizenship are established.
