Hroisman unveils prerequisites for 18.5 hryvnia to dollar exchange rate

The hryvnia exchange rate could be no more than 18.5 to the U.S. dollar if Ukraine was producing enough of own gas and did not buy it abroad.

As reported by Censor.NET citing UNIAN, Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Hroisman said it in an interview with a Ukrainian online media outlet.

"I've recently looked at analytics saying that if we produced [enough of] own gas in Ukraine and did not buy it for foreign currency, the dollar would have cost no more than 18.5 hryvnia," he said.

Hroisman also stressed the government had adopted a policy of achieving energy independence of the country, and the result is expected within 3-5 years.

In late 2016, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the concept of development of Ukraine's gas industry until 2020, which implies increasing the production of natural gas to 27 billion cubic meters per year. This very volume would be enough to fully meet the need of the country in this kind of energy.
