"After we cut off SBU's traditional corrupt income sources in Odesa related to customs, walnut smuggling, illegal gambling, currency exchange, cigarette smuggling, and other predatory schemes, they decided to declare a war on us. First, SBU Deputy Head Demchyna summoned to Kyiv Odesa SBU Head Batrakov, who was intentionally recalled from a business trip to the area of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) in order to instruct him to take up "Saakashvili projects," including among others the Citizen Service Center and the open customs area being currently set up. And yesterday, the SBU broke into the Illichivsk police department to release a citizen arrested for robbery and repeatedly convicted in the past. Alpha [special task force unit - ed.] fighters put police officers against the wall and said that according to their information the police had illegally apprehended the bandit and tortured him, which is wrong. Today I informed the president about the illegal actions of the body directly subordinate to him and that I am going to openly respond to all the facts of blackmail and tyranny," the Odesa governor stated.
"After I learnt that SBU underboss Danylenko himself hired two groups to keep me and my staff under surveillance, I was forced to abandon their SBU protection, although I'm very grateful to the guys who accompanied me. It is not accidental that the SBU at the last moment refused to sign a memorandum with the customs on the transparency of their work in terms of goods bound for customs clearance, while the police and the prosecutor's office signed the document, thus excluding the involvement of their employees in protection racket at least at the regional level," Saakashvili said.
"By the way, Demchyna was appointed after the dismissal of Tripak. Tripak was the mastermind behind the apprehension of "diamond" prosecutors, which caused him to lose his position," the governor added.
