The first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk believes that Ukraine for its own security has to build a powerful army and join NATO .

As reported by Censor.NET, Kravchuk said this on air of Shuster LIVE talk show.

"I survived two wars - the Polish-Nazi and the Nazi-Soviet. I never thought I would live to see the Russian-Ukrainian," he said.

Kravchuk stressed that Ukraine needs to build powerful armed forces. According to him, the dearest things and financial well-being should be sacrificed for the sake of this.

"Ukraine should become a NATO member. We are in constant danger. Only armed forces and NATO's assistance can help defend the country's independence. It is necessary not to speak but hold a national referendum on accession to NATO. I feel that 70 percent of Ukrainians will support the accession," Kravchuk resumed.
